Above the main windows of the third story of the central pavilion appears a series of nine circular windows which serve as a background for 3-foot high granite portrait busts of men eminent in the history of western literature. The pedestals of the busts rest on the pediments below. Seven are placed along the front and one at each end of the central pavilion. The busts appear, from left to right, as follows: Demosthenes, Emerson, Irving, Goethe, Franklin, Macaulay, Hawthorne, Scott, and Dante. Demosthenes, Scott, and Dante were executed by Herbert Adams; Emerson, Irving, and Hawthorne by J. Scott Hartley; and Goethe, Franklin, and Macaulay by F. Wellington Ruckstuhl. Each bust is of uniform size.
