  • 2000 Kastner, p. 131:
    Cecil Beaton noted the contrast between the antique and modern statues in San Simeon's gardens: "Some of the statues, I noted with surprise, were not up to scratch, even cheapjack. Perhaps it was by intent; we'd been so overpowered by Donatellos and Della Robbias that it made the place come alive to see a nymph with bobbed hair eating an apple".
